Thanks for help.

My partner is undergoing a transition. He's a French citizen living in New York. He has to change his legal name in France before he can apply for a name change in the USA.

@Ophelia to add to what has been said: any clinic in the US that operates under the "informed consent" model will allow you receive HRT at nominal cost with very few questions asked. the disadvantage is that this may or may not come with any gynecological consultation... you are considered to be informed enough to consent to administering hormones on your own (thus the name).

@Ophelia A friend of mine who came to Germany from the US had to go through some hassles, but she was able to get HRT medication without being a citizen. Can't be more specific than that, sorry.

@Ophelia It can be done in the UK (England/Scotland/Wales) under the NHS. It's free but requires a lot of appointments (our system's underfunded, it can be slow and requires persistence). Specialist gender identity staff teams handle the process.

@Ophelia This is a ranking of all European countries by LGBT+-friendliness. You should receive solid medical support in all the green-ranking countries, though I would not recommend Ireland personally.

@Ophelia tgeu.org/ has a lot of info in European countries. the US is actually easier to access medical transition than most EU countries from personal experience

@Ophelia in the netherlands the most well-known one is part of the hospital VuMC[0], they don't mention anything about non-Dutch but have got an email on their site, so you could give that a try? iirc they're quite well-known, internationally as well, so they're probably used to getting the question.

@Ophelia It is, but, it depends quite a lot on the specific country. T tends to be strictly controlled everywhere; MTF HRT is often more flexible, eg UK and US.

For more detailed information, I'd recommend searching within /r/asktransgender on Reddit - there's a *lot* of good information there. The UK has an additional sub, /r/transgenderUK.

@Ophelia In Germany it's absolutely possible to transition without being a citizen; you will probably need to have health insurance that is valid in the country though. (It's way cheaper than in the US)
